Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

Invitation to Submit Public Comment on the Draft 2019 Health Education Framework

The California Department of Education (CDE) is pleased to announce that the initial draft of the 2019 Health Education Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Health Education Framework) is available for its first 60-day public review and comment period. The Health Education Framework will provide guidance for implementing the California Health Education Standards.

The Health Education Framework will help teachers, charter school leaders, school district and county administrators, other educators, and publishers design instructional materials, curriculum, instruction, assessments, and professional learning. It addresses contemporary health issues, provides examples of standards-based learning activities, and suggests ways to connect instruction to students’ families and the larger school community.

The draft framework is posted on the CDE Health Education Curriculum Framework Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/he/cf/. An online survey is available to facilitate public comment. The public has until June 29, 2018, to respond to the online survey. Interested parties may also visit one of the statewide Learning Resource Display Centers, listed on the CDE Web site at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/cf/lrdc.asp, to review hard copies of the draft framework.

Comments from the public will be presented to the Instructional Quality Commission for review and possible inclusion into the next draft of the Health Education Framework. The next draft will be available for a second public review in November or December 2018. The State Board of Education is scheduled to take action on the Health Education Framework in May 2019.

If you have any questions regarding the public comment and review period or the Health Education Framework revision process, please contact Jen Buzolich, Education Programs Consultant, Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division, by phone at 916-323-4876 or by e-mail at JBuzolich@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

Tom Torlakson
