State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Appoints Keric Ashley as Deputy Superintendent

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today named Keric Ashley as Deputy Superintendent for the District, School, and Innovation Branch of the California Department of Education (CDE). [Note: the branch name has since been renamed the Performance, Planning & Technology Branch].

"Keric Ashley has been an outstanding leader in the CDE's massive undertaking to launch and operate a new era in online testing that provides more accurate and timely information about student progress," Torlakson said. "These tests will help improve teaching and learning throughout the state."

Torlakson said Keric's extensive background and experience in education make him ideal for the job. "I am so glad to have someone with Keric's track record of success on my team," he said.

Ashley, currently Interim Deputy Superintendent for the District, School and Innovation Branch, has worked in several leadership roles over his 21 years with the Department. Previously, Ashley led CDE's Analysis, Measurement, and Accountability Reporting Division. He also served eight years as Director of the Educational Data Management Division, where he spearheaded efforts to develop and implement the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS). Ashley began his career as an elementary and middle school teacher and a principal.

As Deputy Superintendent, Ashley oversees the development and administration of all statewide assessments, such as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). His responsibilities include the development, calculation, and analyses of statewide education data for state and federal accountability reports and the Local Control Funding Formula.

CDE's District, School, and Innovation Branch [Note: now the Performance, Planning & Technology Branch] is composed of four divisions. For more information, visit the branch Web page.

Ashley replaces Deborah Sigman, who left the Department to become Deputy Superintendent of the Rocklin Unified School District.
