State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Applauds
Signing of Every Student Succeeds Act
SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today issued the following statement after President Barack Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act into law:
“The Every Student Succeeds Act represents a visionary leap forward in federal education policy. I commend the president for his leadership and thoughtfulness in signing this groundbreaking education bill.
“To put it simply, Congress and President Obama have followed California’s lead in eliminating categorical funded programs in favor of larger block grants, enhancing local control, and providing more flexibility to set up accountability systems using multiple measures to assess progress instead of a single test score.
“In California, we continue to push ahead with landmark reforms, such as the Local Control Funding Formula, that are transforming education and better preparing students for college and careers in the 21st century.
“I look forward to working with the federal government on regulations to implement the Every Student Succeeds Act.”
