State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson Issues Statement on Los Angeles Middle School Shooting
SACRAMENTO —State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson released a statement Thursday after two students were shot and others injured in a classroom at Sal Castro Middle School, near downtown Los Angeles.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the students, teachers, staff, and the entire community at Sal Castro Middle School and the Los Angeles Unified School District. I’m saddened that this kind of terrible event is becoming far too common.
“I commend law enforcement and school officials for acting rapidly and quickly locking down the campus to make sure this tragedy was not even worse.
“As we grieve for those who were injured, this is also a time to remind all California public schools to make sure they annually update their mandatory school safety plans.”
The California Department of Education issued a letter today reminding schools to update their school safety plans. Visit the CDE's Safe Schools Planning Web page for more information.
