Application Development Standards Retired 2-28-09


The following Application Development Standards apply to all Web applications that are developed for the California Department of Education.

Visit the CDE Web Standards to determine if these standards apply to a specific Web product that is being developed and to determine which other standards might apply.

Development Technology, Programming Language, and Database

The development standards for Web applications require the use of:

  • Microsoft ASP.Net 3.5 excluding LINQ and AJAX
  • Microsoft Visual Basic 2008
  • Microsoft IIS 6.0 Web server software
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (if a database is used)

Browser Standards (minimum)

Web applications must function and display properly on the browser versions that are listed on the Minimum Web Browser Requirements page, and all subsequent releases through the current version of each browser.

Application Testing

Web applications and sites must be thoroughly tested in all required browser versions.

Web applications and sites must be thoroughly tested in screen resolutions of 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768. Applications and sites should not require horizontal scrolling when viewed with 800 x 600 resolution.

Font Size

Applications must be built upon the "medium" sized font for Microsoft Internet Explorer, however they must be functional in "large" and "largest".
