LEAs: Complete Your 1 Percent Survey! Closes Soon
Local educational agencies (LEAs) are reminded that the annual survey for the 1 percent threshold on CAASPP alternate assessments will be open until the close of business on Monday, November 15, 2021. The California Department of Education (CDE) One Percent Threshold on Alternate Assessments web page contains the link to the 2021–22 survey.
All LEAs are required to report, whether or not they expect to exceed the 1 percent threshold. The 1 percent survey is conducted in response to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). While the CDE is required to both notify the U.S. Secretary of Education and post this information publicly, there are no formal repercussions to the LEAs or to the state. The overall intent of the ESSA regulations is to help address concerns about disproportionality related to potentially overidentifying students for alternate assessments.
Students who are eligible to take the ELPAC are not part of the 1 percent calculation, only students eligible to take the CAASPP in English language arts/literacy (ELA), Mathematics, and Science should be included.
Fall CAASPP New Coordinator Trainings – Register Now
Calling all LEAs CAASPP coordinators who are new to their role or want a refresher! The 2021–22 New Coordinator Training—Fall CAASPP sessions will take place in December. Hosted by our county office of education partners, this CAASPP coordinator training will:
- Review tasks associated with preparing for testing,
- Cover how to support sites during testing, and
- Assist coordinators in planning for post-test activities such as gathering feedback from site coordinators.

November’s Featured Tools for Teachers Resource—“Why Wear Safety Gear?”
Teachers in grade four classrooms can use this month’s Tools for Teachers science instructional resource, “Why Wear Safety Gear?" (account required) to help students investigate energy transfer through collisions. With fall sports underway, now is the perfect time to reinforce sports safety with a California Next Generation Science Standards-aligned lesson.
Starting with a look at actual data about concussions among high school athletes in various sports, students use the Notice/Wonder formative assessment strategy to define a problem. Then, using the Think-Pair-Share protocol, the students consider the question of why football players wear more safety gear than most other athletes. With the context of sports-induced concussions in mind, the students work in groups to create a testable question about energy transfer in collisions and make predictions. Then, they test their predictions using a marble, foam cup, and ramp system, after which they collect data and use proportional reasoning strategies to compare speed and energy relationships.
This lesson—which comes complete with instructions, a presentation to guide the inquiry, data tables, an answer key, and lab setup guide for the teacher—is one that students will want to talk about when asked, “What did you do at school today?”
