2018 Timeline of Activities

Program activities and dates for the 2018 California Teachers of the Year Program.
Participating districts, charter schools, private schools, and professional organizations distribute local applications and organize local Teacher of the Year recognition activities. February 2017
County offices of education (COEs) conduct regional selection and recognition processes for district finalists.

February–July 2017

Postmark deadline for COEs to submit state applications to the California Department of Education (CDE). August 4, 2017
The state selection committee - made up of teachers, administrators, and organization representatives - reviews applications. August 2017
COEs are contacted to arrange site visits for selected applicants.

September 2017

Site visits are conducted by a team of teacher-observers. September 2017
Selected applicants are interviewed by a state selection committee that includes the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or his designee. September 2017
The State Superintendent of Public Instruction makes the final selection and notifies the California Teachers of the Year. October 2017
The Council of Chief State School Officers is notified of California's nominee for the National Teacher of the Year Program. October 2017
The CDE publicly announces the 2018 California Teachers of the Year in a news release. October 2017
California Teachers of the Year meet at the CDE for a professional development day and lunch with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. (Pending available funding) December 2017**
California Teachers of the Year and additional honorees are honored at a special gala. February 2018
