Assessment Spotlight, Issue 1

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) email update, July 5, 2018.

Focusing on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System and English Language Proficiency Assessments of California (ELPAC)—and including, when timely, updates on California’s other statewide assessments.

New Name for the CAASPP Update

The CAASPP Update has a new name—Assessment Spotlight—to capture the breadth of California’s growing statewide testing programs. With the development of assessments in addition to CAASPP well under way, the time is right for the name change. What will not change is the weekly delivery of timely and relevant assessment-related information to your in-box.

Beginning next week, look for the Assessment Spotlight, which is replacing the former monthly ELPAC Update, to arrive on Wednesdays. ELPAC Update subscribers will automatically receive the Spotlight. July’s Featured Digital Library Resource—“Inferencing: Drawing Conclusions in an Informational Text”

This month’s featured Digital Library resource, Inferencing: Drawing Conclusions in an Informational Text External link opens in new window or tab., is a reading activity for grade four students, designed to provide them with multiple opportunities to practice making and supporting inferences. This resource, which provides a comprehensive approach teachers can use to engage in quality formative assessment practices, includes a template for the teacher’s use in organizing content, a graphic organizer for students’ use in crafting inferences, and multiple activities that are accessed through provided links to various informational texts.

The lesson plan follows the model of “I do/ We do/You do,” which allows the teacher to facilitate instruction by gradually releasing the inference-making responsibility to the students. As students transition to the “You do” portion of the lesson, they are asked to read an article and write about what they can infer based on relevant evidence. For this portion of the lesson, the resource includes a number of suggested texts that target varied Lexile levels to provide support to readers of various abilities.

“Inferencing” also offers opportunities for small-group and partner collaboration, during which students discuss and record their inferences. After eliciting evidence of learning, the teacher works with the groups to interpret the evidence, synthesize the content, and write a class-based summary.

Access this lesson, view others like it, and explore the 3,000+ instructional and professional learning resources in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library External link opens in new window or tab. (Digital Library account required). If you value what you find—and we are confident that you will—consider writing a review to support colleagues in the Digital Library community!
