This Month’s Featured Resource in Tools for Teachers—“Lessons from a Story”

Are you curious about the resources in the new Tools for Teachers website? For an example of the excellent English language arts/literacy instructional resources that can be found on this new website, check out “Lessons from a Story” External link opens in new window or tab. , which teachers can use to help students learn how determine the central message of a text selection and explain how it is conveyed throughout the text.

In the lesson, students read six short stories and participate in a small-group activity in which they sort the stories by central message. Then, the students share and explain their sorting decisions with the class. The lesson finishes with the students completing a worksheet that asks them to read a story and determine the central message independently.

This easy-to-use resource embeds the formative assessment process using the Think Aloud, Think-Pair-Share, and Strategic Questioning strategies. Accessibility strategies and other instructional differentiation considerations also are a part of this resource to help teachers meet diverse student needs in the classroom. Step-by-step directions and supporting documents are provided to help teachers easily implement this lesson for both in-person and distance learning. In addition, teachers can provide the lesson activities for academic support if parents wish to help with their child’s learning at home.

“Lessons from a Story” is included in the grade three Interim Assessment Connections Playlist “Read Literary Texts,” which consists of resources that help teachers provide instruction in the content assessed on the “Read Literary Texts” Interim Assessment Block. This playlist is one of two resources that can be fully accessed by anyone on the Tools for Teachers External link opens in new window or tab. landing page. To view other resources in full, LEA staff members need a Tools for Teachers account, which they can obtain either through self-registration or through their LEA CAASPP coordinator.

New Feature in CERS: Student Information System Integration

The California Department of Education recently added an enhancement to the California Educator Reporting System (CERS) that allows LEAs to automate the process of creating teacher–student group assignments in CERS by integrating CERS with their Student Information System (SIS). LEAs that are interested in using the CERS-SIS integration feature will need to work with their SIS vendors to set up this process.

More information about this feature is available on the CAASPP CERS-SIS Integration web page External link opens in new window or tab.. LEA CAASPP coordinators and SIS vendors have received information from the California Technical Assistance Center regarding this new feature. Please note that the original process for uploading student groups into CERS using a separate upload file remains an option for LEAs to assign student groups to teachers.

Please share this email with any educators in your LEA who would be interested in or benefit from this information.
