CSA Provides LEAs Information on Spanish RLA Skills and Programs!

Is your local educational agency (LEA) interested in gathering more information about students’ reading/language arts (RLA) skills in Spanish? Is your LEA seeking a means of evaluating local Spanish programs? With the California Spanish Assessment (CSA) you have come to the right place! Administering the CSA not only is an excellent way to assess students’ Spanish language skills in reading, listening, and writing mechanics but also can provide your LEA with useful information to locally evaluate and strengthen its Spanish instructional programs.

The CSA is available to administer remotely and in person—while following local safety guidelines—through July 30, 2021. We are encouraging LEAs with CSA-eligible students, particularly in high school, to register those students for the CSA and administer the assessment this spring. LEAs can process the registration in the Test Operations Management System (TOMS). You can find information on registration in TOMS in the 2020–21 TOMS User Guide, which is located on the CAASPP website External link opens in new window or tab..

For more information about the CSA External link opens in new window or tab., visit the CAASPP website External link opens in new window or tab.. There, you can find helpful resources such as the “What Is the CSA” video External link opens in new window or tab. in English and Spanish, along with a flyer on the benefits of administering the CSA, as well as a Communication and Outreach Toolkit External link opens in new window or tab. that includes resources to inform parents and guardians about the CSA.

First Report in New “ELPAC in Action” Series

We are happy to announce our first “ELPAC in Action” report, which features the Tulare County Office of Education’s development of resources that integrate English Language Arts/English Language Development Standards with the California Next Generation Science Standards by familiarizing educators with the ELPAC task types. This work supports the purpose of developing local baseline science assessments that support language development in all students, including English learners. Find this newly posted report on the new “ELPAC in Action” Report Series web page, located on the California Department of Education website.

This new series will feature LEAs sharing their successes, challenges, and lessons learned while implementing one or more components of the ELPAC System. Watch for notification of more “ELPAC in Action,” as reported by California LEAs!
