CSA Item Writer Workshop: Spots Still Available

Are you interested in learning how to write test items for state assessments? It’s not too late to apply to participate in this fall’s California Spanish Assessment (CSA) Item Writer Workshop, November 15 through 17! Participants will receive training on how to write quality test items and learn about opportunities to write items for future versions of the CSA. The workshop will take place during the instructional day. Local educational agencies (LEAs) will be reimbursed for the cost of a substitute teacher (if needed) or participants will be paid an honorarium (if on noncontract days). Spots Still Available for the 2022 Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series Fall Sessions!

Register now to secure your spot for the fall sessions of the 2022 Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series! This engaging series will provide direct, online training focused on leveraging the interim and formative components of the Smarter Balanced comprehensive system of assessments to inform teaching and learning.

The training is designed for teachers, instructional coaches, and educators on special assignment, but LEA CAASPP and ELPAC coordinators and administrators may also find this training series useful to support local educators.

This series, which kicked off in summer 2022, consists of three distinct, independent modules with multiple opportunities to attend. A description of each module, and dates for the fall 2022 offerings are as follows:

Module 1: Using the Formative Assessment Process and Tools for Teachers Website to Boost Instruction

  • September 20, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
  • September 27, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Module 2: Gauging Student Progress with the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments and Related Online Systems

  • September 21, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
  • September 28, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Module 3 is divided into separate sections as follows:

Module 3A: Interim Assessment Hand Scoring for English Language Arts/Literacy

  • October 4, from 9 a.m. to noon
  • October 11, from 9 a.m. to noon

Module 3B: Interim Assessment Hand Scoring for Mathematics

  • October 5, from 9 a.m. to noon
  • October 12, from 9 a.m. to noon

Registration Remains Open for the Introduction to CERS Fall Training Sessions

Registration remains open for the fall 2022–23 Introduction to the California Educator Reporting System (CERS) online training. CERS is a free tool available to all California LEAs for accessing student assessment results for both interim and summative assessments, using secure logon information. Two distinct training sessions are being offered:

  • Introduction to CERS for Coordinators and Administrators, for staff who are responsible for managing the LEA’s use of the CERS system—that is, users who have an LEA or site coordinator role in the Test Operations Management System. This three-hour online training will include opportunities to practice using various features of CERS and will cover topics such as:
    • Overview of CERS features for viewing assessment results
    • Options for viewing Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment results
    • Resources available to support staff
    • Assigning teachers access to their students’ results

  • Introduction to CERS for Teachers, for CERS users who have access to CERS data—that is, teachers who have students rostered in the system and other LEA staff who are interested in using CERS. This three-hour online training will engage attendees in the CERS system and will include topics such as:
    • Overview of CERS and available assessment results
    • Customization of student groups and search filter options
    • System features specific to Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment results, including key/distractor analysis, item level analysis, and links to lesson plans in Tools for Teachers

High School Equivalency: A Transition is on the Way!

HiSET® is becoming part of PSI Services (PSI) LLC. For students currently testing, their progress remains unaffected. There will be a testing freeze while systems transfer from Education Testing Services (ETS) to PSI. Between September 24 through October 2, 2022, there will be no HiSET® testing. Once testing resumes, students will be able to pick up testing where they left off. All other functions will be available during the testing downtime.

Important dates to remember:

  • Thursday, September 22 is the last day to register for HiSET® testing using the ETS platform. Starting on September 23, 2022, if test takers have the option to register themselves, they will be able to open their My HiSET® accounts on the PSI system.
  • Friday, September 23 is the last day for testing on ETS systems. Test Centers will begin PSI system installations and set up.
  • Saturday, September 24 through Sunday, October 2 there will be no HiSET® testing.
  • Monday, October 3 is the first day of HiSET® testing on PSI system.

California High School Proficiency Exam

The fall California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) registration is now open and will close on September 16, 2022.

Important date to remember! Effective July 1, 2023, the current CHSPE test series will be coming to an end. Students must complete all remaining sections prior to this date. More information is available on the CHSPE website External link opens in new window or tab..

September’s Featured Professional Learning Resource in Tools for Teachers—Effective School-Home Partnerships!

Interested in new ways to strengthen relationships with students and their families? The Tools for Teachers website External link opens in new window or tab. (account required) now offers new professional learning resources for teachers and other staff in California LEAs. Effective School-Home Partnerships features four independent modules developed to assist educators in communicating with students and their families about topics such as student data. The modules, which are designed to be used by individual educators or as part of a professional learning community, are as follows:

Each module includes a Learning Guide and Facilitator Video Notes to help facilitate the embedded small group activities and self-reflection, in addition to a set of videos demonstrating examples of less effective and more effective communication styles. To access these and other professional learning resources, LEA staff can obtain a Tools for Teachers account either through the self-registering web page (PDF), or by requesting an account through their LEA CAASPP coordinator.
