Focusing on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System and English Language Proficiency Assessments of California (ELPAC)—and including, when timely, updates on California’s other statewide assessments.
2017–18 CAASPP Administration Closes on Successful Note
Congratulations! The 2017–18 CAASPP administration has come to a close. More than 16.6 million CAASPP assessments, summative and interim, were collectively administered according to the following:
- 3.2 million Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment for English language arts/literacy (ELA)
- 3.2 million Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment for mathematics
- 35,885 California Alternate Assessment for ELA
- 35,858 California Alternate Assessment for mathematics
- 16,162 California Alternate Assessment for science
- 1.4 million California Science Test
- 6,718 Standards-based Test in Spanish
- 8.8 million Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment
Further, on May 8, the previous record for the number of concurrent users was broken, with 570,745 test takers supported on that day!
We appreciate and extend our thanks for the cooperation and coordination we enjoy with California educators and students to achieve a successful administration. We look forward to continuing our successful work in the 2018–19 school year.
Sample CAASPP Student Score Reports and Guides to the Reports
Sample 2017–18 CAASPP Student Score Reports and Guides to Understanding the Student Score Reports are now available on the CAASPP Portal Student Score Report web page. These documents are available in English and Spanish for the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments, California Alternate Assessments, and Standards-based Tests in Spanish. Additional translated versions are forthcoming and will be posted on the same web page when they become available.
More Progress for ELPAC!
At its meeting on July 11, 2018, the State Board of Education approved the following actions to continue ELPAC’s forward movement:
- Bring ELPAC into the CAASPP contract to include the following:
- Activities associated with transitioning the Initial and Summative ELPAC from a paper-pencil test (PPT) to a computer-based assessment (CBA) (with student and test examiner interfaces, when applicable)
- Ongoing administrations of the ELPAC PPT until the transition to the ELPAC CBA is complete
- Activities associated with developing the Alternate ELPAC CBA for eligible students in accordance with their individualized education programs
- Ongoing administration of all components of the CAASPP System through the 2021–22 school year
- Activities associated with transitioning the two currently separate assessment systems—CAASPP and ELPAC—into one to ensure efficiency that would include, but not be limited to, a single sign-on
- Adopt the proposed amended ELPAC emergency regulations.
- Direct the CDE to circulate the required Notice of Proposed Emergency Action, and then submit the emergency regulations to the Office of Administrative Law (OAL) for approval.
- Authorize the CDE to take any necessary action to respond to any direction or concern expressed by the OAL during its review of the Finding of Emergency and proposed emergency regulations.
- Adopt the proposed amended ELPAC regulations.
- Direct the CDE to commence the rulemaking process.
- Authorize the CDE to take any necessary action to respond to any direction or concern expressed by the OAL during its review of the Notice, Initial Statement of Reasons, and proposed regulations.
