New School Year, New Planning to Do: Interim Assessment Overview and Blueprints
The 2019–20 Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments will be available to California local educational agencies (LEAs) beginning September 3, 2019. To help staff in planning their use of the interim assessments during the new school year, Smarter Balanced has developed the 2019−20 Interim Assessments Overview (PDF), which includes the following:
- A description of the ways in which the interim assessments can support teaching and learning
- A chart comparing the features of Interim Comprehensive Assessments (ICAs), Interim Assessment Blocks (IABs), and focused IABs
- A listing of the ICAs, IABs, and focused IABs available for each grade
For more details about each available interim assessment, including the claims and targets assessed and the number of items, refer to the blueprints on the California Department of Education (CDE) Interim Assessments web page.
Check out these helpful planning documents today, and watch for announcements of additional interim assessment reference documents that will be available from the CDE in the coming weeks to further assist educators.
Reminder: Complete All Hand Scoring for Interim Assessments Before System Downtime
The Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments and related systems will experience downtime beginning on Tuesday, August 27, at 5 p.m. and lasting through Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at 8 a.m. to prepare for the transition to the new school year. During this system downtime, all student responses and associated hand scoring materials will be cleared from the Interim Assessment Hand Scoring System (IAHSS) and will no longer be available for hand scoring.
To ensure that student results from all completed 2018–19 interim assessments appear in the Interim Assessment Reporting System, all outstanding hand scoring must be completed in the IAHSS before the system downtime begins on August 27.
Updated accessibility resources for the 2019–20 CAASPP administration are now available! The revised Matrix One: CAASPP Accessibility Resources displays the embedded and non-embedded universal tools, designated supports, and accommodations that are allowed as a part of the CAASPP System for the new school year. Other changes include the following:
- Illustration glossaries designated support has been added
- Medical device designated support has been renamed “medical support”
- New format to display universal tools, designated supports, and accommodations
ELPAC––Last Chance to Participate in Field Test!
Are you interested in having your LEA participate in the computer-based ELPAC field test? There’s still time for your LEA to join the group! The field test is scheduled for this October 1 through 25, and we need as many LEAs as possible with 15 to 20 English learners enrolled in grades two and nine through twelve.
If your LEA is not already set to participate in the field test, please consider joining us in this effort. And if you are already participating and have additional students in these grades whom you would be willing to test, please let us know.
