Attention All LEAs: 1.0 Percent Justification Survey Deadline Extended!

The 1.0 Percent Justification Survey deadline has been extended to November 15, 2019, so all local educational agencies (LEAs) can complete the survey. Remember, regardless of whether your LEA exceeded the 1.0 percent threshold, reporting still is required.

November’s Featured Digital Library Resource—“We Have the Same Birthday”

November’s featured Digital Library resource is “We Have the Same Birthday” External link opens in new window or tab. (Digital Library account required), an engaging lesson for introducing students in grade six to mathematics functions. Using function tables that have a series of input values in one column and corresponding output values in another column, students are asked to generate a mathematics rule based on the related values in each table that will allow them to calculate an output value for any given input value.

The 45-minute lesson begins with the teacher presenting the students with a scenario about birthdays. Then, the students practice using function tables in pairs while participating in a “function machine” activity. During the activity, they take part in mathematical discourse to decide which data from the birthday scenario needs to be included in their tables in order to find the rule or relationship between the number pairs. After the activity, the teacher guides the students as they create graphs to represent the data from their tables. The lesson finishes with the students expressing their understanding in writing while using vocabulary from the lesson.
