Needed: California Special Education Teachers with CA NGSS Knowledge for Alignment Process

Do you teach students with severe cognitive disabilities and have experience with implementing the Science Connectors, which are derived from the California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS)? And are you interested in a professional learning opportunity related to the California Alternate Assessment (CAA) for Science? If so, we would like to hear from you. The California Department of Education is recruiting special education teachers to evaluate the alignment of the CAA for Science with the CA NGSS. This two-day workshop will be held in Sacramento this fall on November 5 and 6. To apply for this opportunity, please email your name, school and district name, and a brief description of your current teaching role to CAASci@humrro.org as soon as possible.

During the workshop, participants will receive training for the alignment process, which involves using laptops and spreadsheets and requires the ability to work independently and in grade-level groups. Travel, lodging, and meals will be provided for participants. Substitute teacher reimbursement up to $150 per day or a stipend of $150 per day is offered to encourage participation.

Keep in mind that involvement in assessment development at the state level can be an impressive addition to your résumé and may help with career advancement opportunities!

Preparing for the 2019–20 CAA for Science—Version Assignments and Administration Planning Guides Posted!

We are pleased to announce that the school version assignments and the 2019–20 CAA for Science Administration Planning Guides for grades five and eight and high school are now posted on the CAASPP Portal CAAs web page External link opens in new window or tab.. These important guides provide local educational agencies (LEAs) and test examiners with the following:

  • Basic information on the CAA for Science administration and test security

  • The Science Connectors being assessed

  • What to consider when deciding the best time to administer a CAA for Science performance task to a student

  • A schedule planner template to assist in deciding when to administer each performance task

Educational Testing Service has assigned each school to one of four versions of the CAA for Science, and all grade levels within a school will have the same version assignment. For example, a K–8 school assigned to Version 1 will use the Administration Planning Guides, Version 1 for both grades five and eight. To find your school-level version assignment, go to the CAASPP Portal CAA for Science Version Assignments for 2019–20 Test Administration web page External link opens in new window or tab., select your county, and locate your school in the table by using your county-district-school code.

Because the 2019–20 CAA for Science will be available to begin administering on September 3, please be sure to share these Administration Planning Guides now with teachers and test examiners to allow them as much time as possible to plan how best to integrate each of the four embedded performance tasks into their instructional calendars.

For questions about the guides and accessing your school’s correct version, please contact the California Technical Assistance Center by phone at 800-955-2954 or by email at caltac@ets.org.

Please share this email with any educators in your local educational agency who would be interested in or benefit from this information.
