Summer Scoring Training Opportunities for Educators
Throughout August, Educational Testing Service is conducting regional in-person Summer Scoring Workshops. These one-day workshops are training teachers and other educators on the use of the Smarter Balanced rubrics to score student responses. The discussion and hands-on format allow for ample and powering professional learning that teachers can take back to inform their classroom practice.
Interested educators can register for these workshops by completing the online 2015 CAASPP Hand Scoring Training Registration Form. [Note, the preceding web address is no longer valid.] Registration priority will be given to classroom teachers. If necessary, other LEA staff will be placed on a wait list until closer to the workshop date, when space availability can be determined.
The Summer Scoring Workshops began on August 3, and the locations and dates of the remaining sessions are as follows:
- Fresno Hotel and Conference Center Education—August 10 and 11 (English language arts/literacy [ELA], August 10; mathematics, August 11)
- Los Angeles County Office of Education—August 11 and 12 (mathematics, August 11; ELA, August 12)

Digital Library Featured Resource
The Digital Library resource 5th Grade Formative Writing Assessment for Cognitive Disabilities was developed to instruct grade-level writing content and measure growth over time in the six writing traits: ideas, organization, conventions, sentence fluency, word choice, and voice. This resource, developed specifically for use with students with cognitive disabilities, is designed to inform teaching throughout the school year. It provides teachers with information on student progress as well as a guideline on which skills are mastered during the acquisition phase of learning. This resource is intended to be used as a model for teachers when developing their own writing lesson plans. Multiple documents, including graphic organizers, activity sheets, and a three-point rubric, are available for download. Parallel resources for grades seven and ten also are available in the Digital Library.
The Smarter Balanced Digital Library includes over 2,600 formative assessment resources, including approximately 50 new resources that were recently added.
