CAASPP Update, Issue 104California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) e-mail update sent out on June 3, 2015.
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Update, from the California Department of Education (CDE), is a regular e-mail for K–12 educators, including testing coordinators, that focuses primarily on the Smarter Balanced assessments, which are a major component of the CAASPP system. CAASPP also includes the California Alternate Assessments and science assessments. Please forward this e-mail to any educators in your local educational agency (LEA) who would be interested in or benefit from this information.
In this issue:
- Summative Assessments
- California Alternate Assessment
New resource! The CDE has just released a short video that introduces the Smarter Balanced system of assessments and describes the three main components of the system: summative assessments, interim assessments, and the Digital Library. This video is available on the CDE Smarter Balanced web page.
Please note: The Test Operations Management System (TOMS) has an upcoming scheduled downtime for upgrades and system maintenance. The downtime will be from Friday, June 5, through Saturday, June 6. Downtimes will be in effect from 6 p.m. on the first day through 8 a.m. on the second day (Pacific time).
CAASPP Update readers preparing for and carrying out the administration of the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are encouraged to regularly visit the CDE CAASPP System web page and CAASPP website for new and updated resources and information.
As of June 1, 2015, approximately 3.2 million students had taken at least one Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment, and approximately 1,805 LEAs had administered at least one test.
To assist the CDE in efficiently processing appeals for those students who took the test in error please follow these guidelines:
- For tests that have not been completed by the student—submit a reset appeal request.
- For tests that have been completed by the student—contact CalTAC by phone at 800-955-8354 or by email at email@example.com. To process request please provide the following information LEA and school names, CDE code, student's SSID, provide name of test taken and grade.
- For tests where a student did not receive access to translation or glossary—submit a reset appeal request.
Important Information About Reporting
As LEAs complete testing for the 2015 spring administration of the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments, their preliminary individual student results and aggregate results are available on the Online Reporting System (ORS). These results are partial and preliminary as the results can change due to status of outstanding appeals, rescores, and additional students completing the assessments.
Currently, only LEA CAASPP coordinators have access to these partial and preliminary results. In August, test site coordinators will also be able view the partial and preliminary results. Although the ORS allows for LEA CAASPP coordinators to print and download the results for school and district staff use, these partial and preliminary results from ORS should not be shared with the public.
Approximately four weeks after an LEA completes all statewide CAASPP testing, final student scores and aggregate files will be available on the TOMS for download. This includes PDF files of student score reports and aggregate reports. Please note, CDs of aggregate results will no longer be provided to LEAs; these results can now be downloaded from the TOMS.
Beginning in July, Educational Testing Service (ETS) will begin shipping the individual score reports (i.e., two copies) approximately eight weeks after an LEA completes testing. Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations Section 863 requires LEAs to provide or transmit the results to parent or guardian no more than 20 working days after receipt of the student score reports. If the LEA receives the student score reports after instruction has ended the LEA shall make the student score report available to the parent or guardian no later than the first 20 working days of the next school year.
Annual release of CAASPP statewide results is tentatively scheduled for mid-August. The CAASPP results for Science and Standards-based Tests in Spanish results will be reported using the same format as in previous years. However, the CDE and ETS are currently developing a new website to display the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment Results in a new graphical and dynamic way.
Stay tuned for more information about this new website that will display the CAASPP Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments results to the public.
California Alternate Assessment
There is only one week left in the California Alternate Assessment testing window. Approximately 6,000 tests have not been completed. Please do your best to finish up your testing by the June 10 deadline. When the window closes, student’s “paused” tests will be transitioned to “complete” and scored accordingly.
Please take an opportunity and provide the CDE with your comments through the
online CAA Post-Test Survey. [Note: the preceding web address is no longer valid.]
