Summative Assessments

CAASPP Update readers preparing for and carrying out the administration of the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are encouraged to regularly visit the CDE CAASPP System web page and CAASPP website External link opens in new window or tab. for new and updated resources and information.

As of June 15, 2015, over 3.2 million students had taken at least one Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment, and approximately 1815 LEAs had administered at least one test.

The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment Office congratulates California LEAs for a smooth completion of the first operational administration of the Smarter Balanced tests. The CDE recognizes that this was a collaborative effort involving LEA and school staff across departments and levels. Kudos to all!

The CDE is gathering feedback on the 2014–15 test administration by two means: the Post-Test Survey and focus groups. Reports derived from both will be available in late summer. Throughout California, focus groups consisting of LEA CAASPP coordinators, school test coordinators, and test administrators, teachers, and students were convened to gather feedback on their online test administration experience. That feedback will be used in planning and preparing new resource materials and supports for the 2015–16 test administration.

Important dates to remember in preparation for the 2015–16 CAASPP test administration: September 5 through 13, CALPADS is scheduled to be off-line for system enhancements.

Digital Library

On June 15, Smarter Balanced released a new landing page and other enhancements to improve user experience with the Digital Library External link opens in new window or tab.. The new landing page includes featured resources to promote a variety of resource types, focused filtering to help users better identify helpful resources, and a new ribbon display to highlight important notifications. In addition to the new landing page, the Digital Library now offers new collaboration features, including the option to subscribe to topic forums and discussion threads and the option to receive e-mail notifications for new topic forum and discussion thread postings.

CAASPP Online Assessments Post-Test Survey

The CAASPP Online Assessments Post-Test Survey is for your comments. Your feedback will help the CDE with its efforts to provide timely, effective supports for future test administrations.

California Alternate Assessments

The California Alternate Assessments (CAA) Field Test window has now closed. While final numbers are not yet available, over 31,100 students completed both the English language arts and mathematic tests. The CDE appreciates the hard work LEAs have put into making the transition to the CAA. Announcements of additional resources and opportunities for participating in CAA development will be announced this summer.

Educational Testing Service is still accepting applications for CAA content reviewers. Content reviewers may be asked to review test design plans, item specifications, testing blueprints, and/or English language arts and mathematics items. Interested individuals are asked to complete an online Content Reviewer Application External link opens in new window or tab.. Please share this application with other California educators.
