CAASPP Update, Issue 116

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) e-mail update sent out on August 26, 2015.

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Update, from the California Department of Education (CDE), is a regular e-mail for K–12 educators, including testing coordinators, that focuses primarily on the Smarter Balanced assessments, which are a major component of the CAASPP system. CAASPP also includes the California Alternate Assessments and science assessments. Please forward this e-mail to any educators in your local educational agency (LEA) who would be interested in or benefit from this information.

Summative Assessments

The CDE is pleased to announce a tentative public release date of September 9 for the 2014–15 CAASPP results. As in previous years, LEAs will have embargoed preview access to review their LEA’s results before the public release. Next week, the CDE will send to LEA superintendents, charter school administrators, and CAASPP coordinators the Internet address and password to preview the site.

Parent Guides to the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are now available on the CAASPP Web site under the Students and Parents tab. The guides are grade-span specific, with one guide created for each of the three grade groupings tested: grades three through five, grades six through eight, and grade eleven. The guides contain sample questions for both English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics at each tested grade level.

Next week, an archived Webcast for LEA coordinators and public information officers will be will be available in the Webcast Archives section under “Current Administration” on the CAASPP System Tests—Training Videos and Resources Web page External link opens in new window or tab.. This Webcast addressed the new Web pages for the ELA and mathematics assessments, student score reports, and such resources as the new parent guide to Smarter Balanced assessments.

Reminder: All student condition codes must be entered into the Test Operations Management System (TOMS) by September 15, 2015. Instructions for using condition codes in the 2014–15 version of TOMS can be found on the CAASPP Test Operations Management System Web page External link opens in new window or tab..

CAASPP Student Score Report Guides are one-page documents that describe each part of the student score reports. They currently are available in English and have been translated in ten languages. The CAASPP Student Score Report Guides for the Standards-based Tests in Spanish for Reading/Language Arts in grades two through eleven are available in English and Spanish.

Reporting Achievement Level Descriptors and Claim Achievement Level Descriptors External link opens in new window or tab. are now available. The reporting achievement level descriptors provide brief descriptions of how a student performed in ELA and mathematics. The claim achievement level descriptors provide brief descriptions of how a student performed in key areas, also called claims, in ELA and mathematics.

CALPADS Downtime and Interim Assessment Administration

The California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS) is scheduled for downtime from Monday,
September 7, at 5 p.m. through Monday, September 14, at 6 a.m.

Please note that during this downtime, LEAs may administer the interim assessments to students appearing in CALPADS for the LEA prior to the downtime. However, new students and revisions to students’ demographic data (including grade and school) will not be reflected in TOMS during this downtime.

Using the Completion Status System to Monitor Interim Assessments

As schools begin administering the interim assessments for 2015–16, the Completion Status System is the primary means of viewing test status and completion data. The Completion Status System, found within the Online Reporting System, includes helpful Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment test data, such as which students have started or completed testing, test session ID numbers, and whether test sessions are paused or have expired. Please note that this interface does not provide users with score reports, test performance data, or accountability reports. Digital Library—September 10 Webcast

Save the date! On Thursday, September 10, from 1 to 2 p.m., ETS and the CDE will host a live, interactive Webcast for LEA staff to provide an overview of and update on the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. In addition, ETS, CDE, and Smarter Balanced staff will respond to questions from viewers. The live Webcast will be available through the CAASPP Webcast web page External link opens in new window or tab.. No registration or login account is required, and the Webcast will be recorded and archived.
