Upcoming Downtimes for CAASPP Online Systems
Additional features are in the works for the Test Operations and Management System (TOMS)! In preparation for those features and for availability of the 2015–16 Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments, the following downtimes are scheduled in the coming two months:
- December 28, 8 p.m. through January 3, 9 p.m.
TOMS unavailable; student test assignments and testing settings cannot be modified.
- January 13, 9 p.m. through January 18, 9 p.m.
Test Administrator Interface and Interim Assessment Viewing System unavailable; Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments cannot be administered or previewed.
Test Administration Updates: Operating Systems and Secure Browsers
The CDE has approved temporary support of iOS 9.0 and 9.1 for administering the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments on iPad devices. Apple has tentatively scheduled the release of iOS 9.2 before the end of the calendar year and approval for use of this system for testing is expected in early January. Once iOS 9.2 has been approved, iOS 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 can be used to administer interim assessments until the January 13-18 downtime of TOMS. During this downtime, LEAs will be required to update to iOS 9.2 to administer both interim and summative assessments once TOMS comes back online on January 19. Stay tuned for more details on the iOS 9.2 approval timeline.
Secure browser 8.0 is now available for download on the CAASPP website and will be the required secure browser to administer both the summative and the interim assessments after January 19. Note that secure browser 7.2 will be supported to administer the interims only until January 19.
“All” Means All—Universal Tools and Designated Supports
Universal tools and designated supports offer individual experiences/settings for students taking the CAASPP assessments and are available to all students. Designated supports, however, must be entered into TOMS by an authorized adult prior to testing, while universal tools can be controlled by the student at the time of testing.Test administrators and students should use the Smarter Balanced training tests to find the best configuration of universal tools and designated supports that will provide the student the best possible experience during summative testing. A wealth of detailed guidance can be found in the Smarter Balanced Usability, Accessibility, and Accommodations Guidelines (PDF).
