Register Now for the CAASPP 2016–17 Pretest Workshop!

Dates for the CAASPP 2016–17 Pretest Workshop have been set for early next year, and registration is open to all LEA CAASPP coordinators. Come learn how to administer the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments and the California Alternate Assessments (CAAs) as well as the pilots for the new California Science Test and the CAA for Science.

The Pretest Workshop will consist of two parts:

  • Part I: Administration of the online Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments and CAST pilot test, from 8:30 a.m. to noon

  • Part II: Administration of the CAAs, including the CAA for Science pilot test, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The workshop will be presented throughout the state, and many of the sessions will be held at county offices of education (COEs):

In addition to the in-person sessions, the full workshop will be presented as a Webcast on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, with Part I beginning at 9 a.m. and Part II beginning at 1 p.m. This Webcast will be later archived on the CAASPP Administration of the CAASPP System Summative Assessments—Training Videos and Webcasts web page External link opens in new window or tab.. Registration will not be required to view the Webcast.

Featured Digital Library Resource―Optimizing: Security Cameras Math Challenge for 6th Grade

This month’s Digital Library featured resource, Optimizing: Security Cameras Math Challenge for 6th Grade External link opens in new window or tab. (Digital Library account required), asks students to address a real-world dilemma using data and diagrams based on geometric functions. Working both individually and collaboratively, students find and compare the areas of triangles and quadrilaterals, and then provide evidence to support recommendations for a shop owner installing security cameras.

Through comparing data on different camera placement options, the students work to articulate their findings and support their assertions. This lesson engages students in academic discussion with their classmates by having them evaluate the work of their peers and attempt to reach consensus. Presentation slides, a student workbook, and a detailed teacher guide that outlines potential issues and offers strategies for addressing them are included.

Developed by the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service at the University of Nottingham and University of California, Berkeley, this classroom-ready lesson is intended for use with all students in grade six. California Spanish Assessment: Educator Involvement Opportunity!

Are you interested in participating in the development of the new California Spanish Assessment (CSA)? CDE testing contractor, Educational Testing Service, is recruiting educators to participate in a development activity, the CSA Test Blueprint Review Meeting, which will take place next month. Test blueprints are an essential step in the development of an assessment; they are the documents that map out the proportions of standards that will be represented on a test. The purpose of this meeting is to lead California educators through a review of the proposed draft test blueprints for the CSA and obtain feedback about the appropriateness and rigor of their various aspects.

The meeting will be held over two days, using online meeting and telephone conferencing capabilities. Blueprints for grades three through five will be reviewed on December 7, and those for grades six through eight and high school will be reviewed on December 8.
