Coming Your Way: Translations of Parent Notification Template

The templates for 2016–17 Notice of CAASPP Administration letter have been translated into Spanish, Eastern Armenian, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Tagalog and will be posted soon. Watch for upcoming notification of their availability on the California Department of Education (CDE) web site.

Several resources have been added to the CAASPP Portal web site, or updated, to help administrators as well as teachers, parents, and students prepare for the 2016–17 CAASPP administration:

Technology Flash—Upgrade Apple Mobile Devices Now!

February is here, and effective today, February 1, LEAs using iOS 10.0 and 10.1 on their Apple mobile devices are no longer able to access summative and interim assessments unless they upgrade to iOS version 10.2. Only users of supported iOS operating system versions 8.0–8.2, 9.2 and 9.3, and 10.2 are able to access both the summative and interim assessments.

LEAs should make sure that all Apple mobile devices to be used for administering the CAASPP assessments for English language arts/literacy, mathematics, and science have a supported operating system loaded. LEAs can verify that these devices use operating systems and secure browsers that are supported for 2016–17 CAASPP testing by visiting the CAASPP Secure Browsers web page External link opens in new window or tab., which can be accessed by selecting the Secure Browsers button on the home page of the CAASPP Portal External link opens in new window or tab..

Mind Your Manner—of Administration

When administering the Smarter Balanced Interim Comprehensive Assessments or Interim Assessment Blocks (IABs), remember that the default setting for manner of administration is “Nonstandardized.” If LEAs decide to administer an interim assessment for potential analysis of performance across time and students, the “Standardized/Benchmark” option might be considered appropriate. To view and set the manner of administration, select the “View” icon before the administration of an interim assessment. A manner of administration tip sheet External link opens in new window or tab. New Digital Library Resources Lists for IABs!

The CDE Digital Library Resource Collections web page includes additions to the Instructional Learning Series, a CDE-developed series of Digital Library resource lists to help teachers prepare students for content assessed on specific IABs. The list now includes resource lists for Grade 7—Read Informational Texts and Grade 7—The Number System.

In addition to the growth in the Instructional Learning Series, new playlists have been added to the Digital Library Connections series for two IABs: Grade 4—Revision External link opens in new window or tab. (DOC) and Grade 6—Geometry External link opens in new window or tab. (DOC). The playlists in the Digital Library Connections series can be useful for locating instructional supports that are aligned with student performance on IABs.

February’s Featured Digital Library Resource

This month’s Digital Library featured resource is “Putting 'Close Reading' into Practice with The Lion and the MouseExternal link opens in new window or tab. (Digital Library account required). This resource is intended for use with all students in grade three and involves a 60-minute close-reading lesson using the fable The Lion and the Mouse. The lesson focuses on teaching students to annotate text, use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words, and create inferences to state the moral of the fable using evidence from the text to support their conclusions. In addition, it incorporates the modeling of annotating by teachers to help reinforce learning goals.

Throughout this lesson, students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning through collaboration with small groups and partners as well as to work independently, answering text-dependent questions. A copy of the fable, a student response worksheet, and a lesson plan with options for extending the lesson are included.

This resource is one of six in the CDE Digital Library Instructional Learning Series playlist for ELA Grade 3­–Read Literary Texts. The playlists from the Instructional Learning Series can be found on the Digital Library Resource Collections CDE web page.
