Can You Dig It? Professional Learning for Digital Library Discoveries
The California Department of Education (CDE) has developed a new tool designed to guide educators’ exploration of the features and resources in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. The tool, a professional learning resource called The Archaeological Digs, offers an investigation of the Digital Library’s contents in two flexible modules based on the formative assessment process. In following the stages of an archaeological dig, the module’s tasks help users locate resources that support professional learning and instruction. The tasks are progressive, allowing users to isolate increasingly specific resources using the numerous filters and resources included in the Digital Library’s search functions.
The Archaeological Digs is available now in the “Related Resources” section of the CDE Digital Library Web page, and in the Digital Library (Digital Library account required). Download the modules and peruse the sample uses, facilitator and participant roles, and time estimates to develop an implementation procedure tailored for LEA and site needs.

The checklist is available in a Word version and an Excel version, both of which CAASPP coordinators can customize to meet their needs:
