2018 CAASPP Pretest Workshop Starts This Month
The CAASPP Pretest Workshop, offered throughout the state this month and next, provides information on how to administer the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments and the California Science Test (CAST) and gives a brief update on the California Alternate Assessments (CAAs). This year, the workshop is scheduled for a half-day only, from 8:30 a.m. to noon; there will not be a separate afternoon session regarding the CAAs. The online registration form , which lists workshop dates and locations, is available to local educational agency (LEA) CAASPP coordinators, who are encouraged to attend. Come and learn about what’s new for 2017–18!
The workshop will include the following topics—and more:

- CAST and CAA for Science
- Updates for accessibility resources
- Practice and training tests
- Test Operations Management System functions
- Test administration
- Test security
- Available resources
- Updates to the Digital Library and Interim Assessment Reporting System
In addition to the 16 scheduled dates and locations, the workshop will be presented as a live Webcast at the Sonoma County Office of Education on Monday, January 29, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Webcast will later be archived on the CAASPP Portal Training Web page .
Coming Soon: 2017–18 Online Standards-based Tests in Spanish
For the 2017–18 school year only, the Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS) will be administered using an online test delivery system. This will be the final administration of the STS, which will be replaced next year by the California Spanish Assessment. The testing window for the STS will be open February 28 through July 16. LEA CAASPP coordinators will be able to access the Test Administration Manual for the online STS by mid-February on the CAASPP Web Portal Primary Language Assessment—STS Web page , which provides more information regarding the STS.
Now Available—Data Entry Interface
The Data Entry Interface (DEI) to input student results from the 2017–18 CAA for Science is now available. As the scores are being entered, LEA and site coordinators and test examiners can view the completion status report, which tracks whether the student’s results from each performance task have been partially entered or completely entered into the DEI. The period during which student results for all three performance tasks must be entered into the DEI opened January 9 and extends through the last day of school. Note that for the California Department of Education to count a student as having participated in the assessment, the student must attempt all three performance tasks, and the student’s results must be entered into the DEI.
Questions about the DEI should be directed to the California Technical Assistance Center by phone at 800-055-2954 or by e-mail at email@example.com.
New California Law Affecting Use of Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments
On January 1, 2018, a new law took effect that impacts the use of student results from the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments. Specifically, the new law—Education Code Section 60642.7(b)—states:
Results from the interim assessments shall not be used for any high-stakes purpose, including, but not limited to, teacher or other school staff evaluation, accountability, pupil grade promotion or retention, graduation, course or class placement, identification for gifted or talented education, reclassification of English learners, or identification as an individual with exceptional needs.
The interim assessments remain available to LEA staff throughout the year to use for professional learning and to administer to students in a manner that is deemed appropriate by the educator.
