Details on the Closing the Achievement Gap (CTAG) for African American Students forum hosted by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond.The achievement gap begins before a student ever enters a kindergarten classroom, and we must employ new and innovative strategies to significantly improve outcomes for all students. To fight the achievement gap, we must also engage county, district, and school administrators; teachers; families; and other stakeholders as we evaluate how best to approach the achievement gap while simultaneously taking action to eradicate it.

April 24, 2019 Forum: Recruiting and Retaining Teachers of Color
This is the second in a series of forums addressing ways to close the achievement gap and improve educational outcomes for all California public education students. Research consistently shows that persistent educational attainment gaps can be reduced or eliminated when students are taught by an effective teacher of the same race. Throughout California, 5.5 percent of the students are African American. However, only 3.9 percent of the teacher workforce is African American and out of this small percentage, only 1.2 percent of those are African American male teachers. This no-cost forum will feature programs that actively work in the areas of recruitment and retention of teachers of color.

On Wednesday, February 20, Superintendent Thurmond hosted the first in a series of forums on “Closing the Achievement Gap for African American Students."
This forum featured educational institutions that have shown success, specifically in closing the gap for African Americans and other students of color.
