Funding Description

Community-Based English Tutoring (CBET) supports free or subsidized English language instruction to parents or other community members who pledge to provide English language tutoring to California school children with limited English proficiency. The funds may be used for direct program services, community notification processes, transportation services, and background checks related to the tutoring program.


Eligible Applicants Local educational agencies
Required Eligibility Criteria One or more English learners on the Spring 2008 Language Census Report (R30-LC).
Other Eligibility Considerations All LEAs that wish to participate in the CBET program for 2008-09, including those LEAs that are currently funded, are required to complete and return an application form.

Allocation Formula Funding is allocated according to a formula based on the most recent annual Language Census Report (R30-LC). The appropriated funds will be prorated according to the number of EL students enrolled in the participating LEAs.
