Oral Health Assessment

Funding Description

Local educational agencies are eligible for reimbursement of costs associated with requirements related to oral health assessments for public school students enrolled in kindergarten (or first grade if student was not previously enrolled in public school kindergarten). The students must present proof by May 31 of having received an oral health assessment by a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional within 12 months of enrollment.

Required Eligibility Criteria Public schools must (1) notify parents or legal guardians of the assessment requirement; (2) collect proper assessment forms from parents; and (3) submit completed forms to local school district by May 31 of each year. Districts must submit a report with specified information, including compliance rates, to their county office of education by December 31 of each year. County offices of education must maintain the data and release it upon request.

Allocation Formula Eligible local educational agencies will receive approximately $8.40/student enrolled in 1st grade. $4,048,000 will be allocated to local educational agencies based on 2008 CBEDS enrollment for first grade. $352,000 will be allocated to county offices of education for data storage and retrieval.
