Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

Funding Description

The CDE, through the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), will grant funds to school sites to provide students with a variety of free fresh fruit and vegetable snacks throughout the school day as a supplement to (and not part of) the school breakfast and school lunch programs, and to teach students about good nutrition. The FFVP encourages schools to partner with other entities in the community to support their efforts.


Eligible Applicants Local educational agencies, other organizations or agencies
Required Eligibility Criteria Public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools are eligible to apply on behalf of elementary school sites that participate in the National School Lunch Program. Applicants must submit a grant application package by the due date. An eligible school site MUST: (1) be an elementary school (see definition below), (2) have 50 percent or more of its students eligible for free or reduced-price meals, (3) provide fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day, (4) agree to make free fresh fruits and vegetables available to all enrolled children, (5) widely publicize within the school the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables, and (6) have documented support of the food service manager, principal, and district superintendent.
Other Eligibility Considerations Per federal law, schools will be chosen based on their percentage of free/reduced-price students, with the highest priority given to schools with the highest percentages of low-income students, to the maximum extent practicable. However, the CDE may select a school with a lower percentage of free/reduced-price enrollment over a school with a higher percentage to either manage the per-student allocation requirements of $50 to $75, or if there are significant concerns about a school’s ability to properly implement and operate the FFVP.

  • a school that contains one or more grades 5-6 only
