CST Released Test Questions

Released test questions for the California Standards Tests (CSTs).

© California Department of Education

In January 2014, the California Department of Education (CDE) stopped administering the California Standards Tests (CSTs) for English language arts, mathematics, and end-of-course assessments in mathematics, history-social science, and science to student. In the meanwhile, the CDE is currently developing a new assessment aligned with the California Next Generation Science Standards. Please note: Students in grades five, eight, and ten are currently administered the CST for science assessments.

For more information, visit the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy and mathematics Web page. The Practice and Training Tests portal External link opens in new window or tab. provides sample questions and practice test scoring guides External link opens in new window or tab. . The Practice Tests provide students with grade-specific testing experiences that are similar in structure and format to the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy and mathematics. The Training Tests provide students with the opportunity to quickly become familiar with the software and interface features. The Training Tests are organized by grade-bands (e.g., 3–5).

Each set of released test questions (RTQs) is representative of the various content areas measured by items on the California Standards Tests (CSTs). The documents listed below contain RTQs taken from portions of the CSTs from 2003 through 2008. Funding to annually add additional RTQs to the available sets of RTQs was eliminated from the state budget beginning with the 2009 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program test administration.

In selecting test questions for release, the following three criteria were used: (1) the questions adequately cover a selection of the academic content standards assessed; (2) the questions demonstrate a range of difficulty; and (3) the questions present a variety of ways in which the standards can be assessed.

The academic preparation practices outlined in the Guidelines on Academic Preparation for State Assessments, posted on the California Department of Education (CDE) STAR Program Resources Web page, will facilitate the appropriate use of the RTQs. Appropriate uses of the RTQs include analyzing whether classroom assessments: (a) address standards with the same rigor as the state assessments; (b) adequately cover the academic content standards; and (c) present a variety of ways in which the standards can be assessed.
