SBE Home

The State Board of Education (SBE) is the governing and policy-making body of the California Department of Education. The SBE sets K-12 education policy in the areas of standards, instructional materials, assessment, and accountability. The SBE adopts textbooks for grades K-8, adopts regulations to implement legislation, and has authority to grant waivers of the Education Code. The SBE has 11 members, appointed by the Governor.

Highlights

Accountability Progress Reporting (APR)
Reports both the state Academic Performance Index (API), and the federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and Program Improvement (PI).

The education principles focus policy making on the essential components of a standards-based educational system.

Information Memoranda
Information memoranda may include background information, updates on issues of interest to the State Board Members, and reports on a variety of educational topics.

No Child Left Behind
Resources on California's ongoing implementation of No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).

Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR)
Administration of the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program used for student and school accountability.
