School Renovation Technology

Funding Description

Federal funding in the amount of $33 million is available to local educational agencies (LEAs) in California for the purpose of lowering the student-to-computer ratio in classrooms, grades four through eight. The funds will be distributed through a competitive grant program to schools that have been renovated, are currently undergoing renovation, or will be renovated in the near future. Eligible applicants include school districts and county offices of education that serve any combination of grades four through eight.

Required Eligibility Criteria Schools are eligible only if they have recently been renovated or will soon be renovated, as defined in the application. Eligibility is restricted to school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools that serve any combination of grades four through eight. A direct funded charter school will be deemed an LEA for the purpose of this program and may apply separately. A locally funded charter school should be included within an application filed by the school district. Free and reduced price lunch participation is not a factor in eligibility.
Other Eligibility Considerations The School Technology Survey must have been completed between January 14, 2002, and June 30, 2002, to be eligible to apply. Education Code Section 51871.5(c) requires that on or after January 1, 2002, a school district shall have a three-year to five-year education technology plan as a precondition of receiving any technology grant administered by the California Department of Education.

Allocation Formula $2,000 per computer to reduce the student-to-computer ratio to 10-to-1 in grades four through eight. Priority will be given to schools with the highest school-wide student-to-computer ratio. Grant awards will be reduced by the amount of funding received under the Technology Literacy Grant Part B.

Other As part of the LEA’s application for this funding, the agency must specify the school(s) for which they are seeking funding. Any funds received must be spent at the school that qualified for the funds. Funding may not be transferred among qualifying schools. The grant must be used to purchase multimedia computers to be placed in classrooms, grades four through eight, excluding libraries and media centers.
