Career ExplorationPrograms providing classroom experience.
There are programs in California that offer career exploration in many fields including the teaching profession, for high school students, those graduating from high school, and even adults who have been in another career.
Regional Occupational Centers and Programs (ROCP)
ROCPs offer training to high school students and adults in various businesses and industries, including the field of education. Individuals interested in teaching might investigate ROCPs that offer courses in child development and education, or careers in education.
California Partnership Academies
High school academies are based on the "school-within-a-school" model in which small, career-focused schools are created within larger high schools. Students are usually cohorted and often teachers teach the same group of students for more than one year. Education is a career option that many academies offer. High school students who are considering becoming teachers should consider enrolling in a high school with a California Partnership Academy that has a education career focus.
Experience in the classroom is a factor than can affect entrance into a teacher preparation program. Substitute teaching is one way to demonstrate teaching experience. It is also a way to determine whether teaching is the right career for an individual. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing sets the requirements for becoming a substitute teacher.
Career counseling assists students and adults in career planning and provides the foundation for acquiring the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable students to make a successful transition from school to the world of work.
