Information on policies relating to use of school facilities, including, but not limited to bathrooms and locker rooms for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ+) students, their educators and their families.

This legal guidance is intended to provide clarity regarding existing state and federal laws that serve to protect transgender and gender nonconforming students against discrimination on the basis of sex, and the responsibilities of district and county office governing boards under these laws.

The following are local education agencies examples of policies that address students’ access to school facilities:

Physical education and athletics are integral parts of the kindergarten through twelfth grade school experience. Educators recognize that a group of students, those who identify as transgender, require our attention to ensure that they have an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of participating in physical education and athletics in a safe and respectful climate.
