California CCSS Symposium

Registration is now open for the California Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Symposium entitled Shedding the Light: Creating Inclusive, Accessible, and Equitable Learning Environments for All Students scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, 2015. This symposium is for general and special educators and is sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE), Special Education Division.

There is no cost for this event but preregistration is required. To register for the in-person meeting or the live broadcast, please visit the California Services for Technical Assistance and Training (CalSTAT) CCSS Web page. There is limited seating at 300 for the in-person meeting. We encourage districts to send a pair of teachers, representing general and special education. Participants are responsible for their own travel, all meals, and hotel accommodations. There are limited reimbursements available to districts for teams of teachers’ and administrators’ participation as noted on the registration site. The live broadcast will have unlimited capacity. We also encourage groups to watch the symposium live and engage in the training sessions. Each session will be filmed and video archived.

Children Now’s Parent Engagement Messages

Please read the following message from Children Now, a California CCSS implementation partner.

Dear CCSS Update Members,

Children Now, a non-partisan non-profit has developed a set of messages designed to complement your existing communications with parents about the Common Core State Standards and the Smarter Balanced Assessments. These messages are intended to be easily inserted into your school newsletters, emails and other direct communications to parents. They can also function as stand-alone messages. They are written in a series so that you can send a brief message on the standards and assessments to parents each week, and include links for further information.

The first three messages, in English and in Spanish, are available on the Children Now Common Core Engagement Messages External link opens in new window or tab. Web page. This set provides basic information on the Common Core Standards, explains how they were developed, and describes some of the differences between the new style of math homework versus the old. They were vetted with focus groups of California parents, and crafted based on their feedback on what kind of information was most useful to them.

We ask that once you use these messages, you email a copy to newsletters@childrennow.org for our records.

We hope these messages are useful, and look forward to continuing to support your communication efforts in the coming weeks around Common Core and the Smarter Balanced Assessments.

If you have any questions, please contact Children Now at 510-763-2444 x118 or email newsletters@childrennow.org.

Thank you,

Ted Lempert
President
Children Now
