Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

Next Learning Acceleration Webinar to Highlight Mathematics

I invite you to join the next webinar, focused on mathematics, in the California Department of Education’s (CDE’s) Learning Acceleration Webinar Series on December 14 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This webinar is open to local educational agencies (LEAs), school administrators, and educators. The virtual event is an opportunity to hear about proven strategies to promote learning acceleration and recovery in the subject of mathematics.

The new state budget includes $7.9 billion for learning recovery; specifically, these are one-time funds to be used through 2027–28 on strategies to support academic learning recovery, along with staff and student social and emotional well-being, following two-and-a-half challenging years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional resources for districts to support these efforts include an extra $3 billion for Expanded Learning, for an ongoing total of $4 billion, to increase time during the school year, summer school, and intersessional programs; decreasing staff-to-pupil ratios; and $250 million to develop literacy programs and hire and train reading and literacy coaches and specialists.

Panelists include:

  • Cheryl Cotton, Deputy Superintendent of CDE’s Instruction, Measurement, and Administration Branch
  • Ellen Barger, Assistant Superintendent, Santa Barbara County Office of Education; Chair, Curriculum Instruction Steering Committee: Mathematics
  • Jim Hollis, Executive Director, Calculus Roundtable
  • Adam Clark, Superintendent, Mount Diablo Unified School District

The CDE has also created an online resource for LEAs to support their efforts to promote learning recovery and acceleration. The CDE Learning Acceleration and Recovery Resources web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/aa/ca/learningrecpgms.asp centralizes information for programs that can be used to support learning recovery efforts. It also includes several highlights of what LEAs have done with these and other funding sources to promote learning recovery. These LEA success stories can be used to inform other LEAs as they create their own learning recovery programs.

Register in advance for this webinar via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UD9TX10ZTJebYe1sCLWHlg [Note: Registration for this webinar is now closed], or you can watch a livestream of the webinar on the CDE Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CAEducation. Please contact Emily Oliva, Education Programs Consultant, Educator Excellence and Equity Division at plsmo@cde.ca.gov with any questions.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
