Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

57th California Native American Day (September 27, 2024)

The 57th California Native American Day is scheduled for September 27, 2024, including a ceremony on the West Steps of the State Capitol. This event—which began as “Indian Day” in 1939 under Governor Culbert Olson and later evolved into California Native American Day in 1968, thanks to the efforts of California tribal leaders and Governor Ronald Reagan—holds deep significance within the California Native American community.

In recognition of this significant day, it is important to note that California Education Code Section 48205 (a)(11) permits students to be excused from school to participate in cultural ceremonies or events. Schools are encouraged to support their students and families in observing this meaningful cultural occasion.

Hosted by the California Tribal Chairpersons Association, Native American Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Friday of September. It serves as a day to honor California’s first people, fostering greater understanding and appreciation of Native American cultures, and reshaping the way Native Americans and their heritage are perceived.

The hope is to see educators, students, and community members at the Capitol to celebrate and honor the enduring legacy and vibrant cultures of California’s Native American communities.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
