Dear County and District Superintendents, Charter School Administrators, School Principals, and Education Partners:

Artificial Intelligence in Education Workgroup

I am writing to invite you to join an exciting and critically important initiative that will shape the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in California’s educational system. In response to Senate Bill 1288, the California Department of Education is convening an AI in Education Workgroup to support safe, effective, and equitable use of AI in schools across the state.

This workgroup will bring together diverse voices, including pupils, teachers, administrators, classified staff, industry experts, and higher education representatives, to develop guidance and a model policy that prioritizes the well-being of pupils and educators. Topics will include data privacy, academic integrity, and strategies to harness AI’s potential without replacing the essential role of educators or exacerbating inequities.

AI in Education Workgroup

We are seeking dedicated individuals who are passionate about education and technology to help lead this initiative. Workgroup members will participate in three virtual full-day meetings and collaborate asynchronously to develop comprehensive recommendations and policies. The Application form is available at https://tinyurl.com/CAAIWorkgroup. Note the application will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Statewide AI in Education Survey

We seek your posted input to assess the current landscape of AI in California’s schools. Please complete our Statewide AI in Education Survey to share how AI is being used in your educational setting and any local policies currently in place. Your feedback will guide our efforts and ensure that workgroup recommendations are informed by real-world experiences. The survey is available at https://tinyurl.com/CAAISurvey.

Conduct a Local Needs Assessment

In addition to participating in the statewide survey, I encourage educational organizations to conduct their own needs assessments regarding AI. These assessments can help you identify specific opportunities and challenges in adopting AI within your schools, understand the local landscape of AI usage, and inform decisions to ensure local AI implementation aligns with your community’s needs and educational priorities.

Together, we can create thoughtful, inclusive policies that leverage AI to support teaching and learning while safeguarding the interests of students and educators. Your voice is essential in this effort.

Thank you for your commitment to California’s students and educators. I look forward to working with you to ensure a bright future for AI in education.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
