California's K-12 Education Community Issues Joint Statement in Support of New Mathematics Framework

SACRAMENTO -- Organizations representing California families, parents, students, teachers, administrators and school board members issued the following joint statement in support of the K-12 mathematics framework recently approved by the California State Board of Education:

"The K-12 Mathematics Framework recently adopted by the State Board of Education (SBE) incorporates new concepts to teach the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. This includes integrating rather than isolating standards by organizing lessons around 'big ideas'; sparking student curiosity through inquiry and open tasks; adding relevancy and authenticity to lessons; and integrating data use into math instruction throughout the grade spans and in traditional and integrated high school pathways. Additionally, the framework provides guidance around a range of instructional options, including personalized learning, differentiated instruction, strategic grouping, supplementary course-taking opportunities, and acceleration to meet the needs of high-achieving learners, as well as those in need of greater assistance.

"On behalf of the students, families, teachers, administrators and school board members we collectively represent, we express our support and appreciation for the framework and for the transparent and participatory process that allowed thousands of Californians to weigh in and see their thoughts included as drafts evolved. As the Mathematics Framework begins implementation throughout the state, we stand ready to assist with the process of ensuring teachers are well-versed with the successful strategies and resources for teaching California's rigorous mathematics standards to improve student opportunities and outcomes."
