Funding Description

The WorkAbility I (WAI) program is governed by California Education Code Sections 56470-56474 and provides comprehensive pre-employment training, employment placement, and follow-up for high school students with an individualized education program in special education who are making the transition from school to work, independent living, and postsecondary education or training. Population served may include secondary students with disabilities, adults with disabilities and other individuals who experience barriers to successful completion of school and gaining meaningful employment.

Required Eligibility Criteria Funding is available for local educational agencies to provide employment training and placement services for special education students in high schools with an approved individualized education program. Applicants shall include in their submissions elements found in California Education Code 56471(e) and are required to place 15 percent of the students they serve in paid work experience as a condition of funding.

Allocation Formula Each grantee will receive a base amount plus a per-pupil amount, based on the number of students served. Existing grantees in the program applying to expand will receive an increase in the base amount.
