Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

Recruiting Focus Group Members for the Revision of the Mathematics Framework

The California Department of Education (CDE) is pleased to announce that it is recruiting members for four focus groups to provide input on the revision of the Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve.

The CDE will convene four focus groups. Each focus group will include between 8 and 12 invitees who will be selected to ensure balanced representation of regions, types of schools, and grade-level experience. To be a member of the focus group, applicants must be educators at the time of appointment. California Education Code Section 44013(a) defines an educator in this way:

“Educator” means a certificated person holding a valid California teaching credential or a valid California services credential issued by the commission who is employed by a local education agency or by a special education local planning area and who is not employed as an independent contractor or consultant.

All interested individuals are invited to apply. We encourage you to distribute this letter to other individuals and stakeholder organizations who might be interested in applying. Please note that there is no stipend for service on a focus group, and there will be no reimbursement for travel or substitute costs.

The focus group meetings will be open to the public, and comments made by both focus group members and members of the public at each meeting will be forwarded to the Instructional Quality Commission and the State Board of Education for consideration.

Focus group meetings are planned for the following dates and locations:

  • August 19, 2019, San Diego County Office of Education, San Diego, CA
  • August 20, 2019, Sacramento County Office of Education, Sacramento, CA
  • *August 20, 2019, Humboldt County Office of Education, Eureka, CA
  • *August 20, 2019, Shasta County Office of Education, Redding, CA
  • August 22, 2019, Santa Clara County Office of Education, San Jose, CA
  • *August 22, 2019, Fresno County Office of Education, Fresno, CA
  • August 26, 2019, Baldwin Park Unified School District, Baldwin Park, CA

An asterisk (*) in front of a date indicates that participants will give their input via video conference.

A detailed agenda will be posted on the CDE Mathematics Framework web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/ prior to each event. Once appointed, focus group members will receive information to prepare for their focus group meeting.

To apply to be a member of a focus group, please use the online application form, which is available on the CDE Mathematics Framework web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/. Online applications and résumés must be submitted no later than 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.
