The MPLP Grant Program was established by Section 114 of Senate Bill 153 External link opens in new window or tab., the Education Omnibus Budget Trailer Bill for the 2024–25 California State Budget (Chapter 38, Statutes of 2024). The 2024 MPLP Grant issued $20 million to the Kern County Superintendent of Schools through a competitive request for applications process to do all the following, in partnership with the California Mathematics Project (CMP) External link opens in new window or tab.:

  • Provide resources to educators on delivering high-quality mathematics instruction to K–12 pupils throughout the state, pursuant to the 2023 Mathematics Framework
  • Coordinate resources and educator training with the grantees of other mathematics educator professional development initiatives, including but not limited to all of the following:

Section 95 of Assembly Bill 121 External link opens in new window or tab., the Education Omnibus Budget Trailer Bill for the 2025–26 California State Budget (Chapter 8, Statutes of 2025), provided the Kern County Superintendent of Schools an additional appropriation of $30 million to expand the impact of the program. The 2025 MPLP Grant allows sustained partnerships with the CMP and existing grant partners for program purposes outlined in the 2024 MPLP Grant, requires augmented collaboration with the Rural Math Collaborative to support mathematics coaching in rural areas, and requires the training of coaches who can be deployed to provide mathematics coaching in schools and local educational agencies with the highest need of support.
