Funding Description

The purpose of this program is to facilitate the enrollment, attendance, and success in school of homeless children and youth and ensure homeless children and youth have equal access to the same free, appropriate, public education as provided to all other students. Services provided cannot replace the regular academic program and must be designed to expand or improve services that are part of the school's regular academic program.

Required Eligibility Criteria Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) include school districts and direct-funded charter schools
Other Eligibility Considerations Applicants were approved for a three-year project period, beginning with Fiscal Year (FY) 2024-25. The California Department of Education (CDE) will issue a new grant award each fiscal year. FY 2025-26 is the second year of the three-year grant cycle.

Other The project period is July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2027. Here are some requirements under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act: (1) Designate a liaison for homeless children and youth. (2) Identify and enroll immediately, even if the homeless child does not have proper enrollment papers or immunization records. (3) Ensure access to all educational and support services, including transportation. (4) Disseminate educational rights. (5) Keep homeless children in the same school of origin.
