COVID-19 and Data Reporting

In 2019–20 and 2020–21, the California Department of Education released limited and/or no data on DataQuest and the California School Dashboard (Dashboard) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically:

• In 2019–20, Senate Bill 98, which was signed into state law in June 2020, prohibited the CDE from reporting state and local indicators on the 2020 Dashboard. The statute also required that available data that would have been included in the 2020 Dashboard be reported on the California Department of Education’s (CDE’s) web site if they were determined to be valid and reliable.
• In 2020–21, Assembly Bill 130, which was signed into state law in July 2021, suspended the publication of state indicators on the 2021 Dashboard but required that available data that would have been included in the 2021 Dashboard be reported on the CDE web site if they were determined to be valid and reliable.

To comply with state law, valid and reliable data available for these years were reported on:

• DataQuest , which is the CDE’s public data reporting website that provides meaningful data and statistics about California's K-12 public educational system. It supports a wide variety of informational, research, and policy needs and includes summary and detailed data reports for multiple subject areas at the school, district, county, and state levels. Downloadable data files are also available within the CDE Accessing Educational Data web page.
• California School Dashboard , which provides parents and educators with performance data on a set of state and local measures to assist in identifying strengths, challenges, and areas in need of improvement. Data were also reported on the School Dashboard Additional Reports and Data web page. Downloadable data files are also available on the CDE Accountability Downloadable Data Files web page.
• The 2021 Data Release:
  • Made available the data files containing the 2021 Census enrollment data and the local indicator data, which are both reported on the 2021 Dashboard,
  • Published the Graduation Rate Additional Report on the School Dashboard Additional Reports and Data web page, and
  • Published the College/Career Measures Additional Report on the School Dashboard Additional Reports and Data web page.
• The 2020 Data Release:
  • To meet this requirement, the CDE has published the College/Career Measures Report and Graduation Rate Additional Report (PDF).
  • Note that additional valid and reliable data have also been posted on DataQuest.
