Career and Technical Advisory Committees Structure

Suggested structure of career and technical advisory committees to be established by school districts.
Membership
  • Business/industry
  • Parents
  • Students
  • Teachers
  • Administrators
  • Labor organizations
  • Representatives of special populations
Recommended Structure
  • 5 to 12 members
  • Chairperson should be from business/industry
  • Secretary should be from education
  • Invite counselors and administrators
  • Make sure all members participate
Types of Committees
  • One committee for a single program
  • One committee for several programs
  • One committee for several schools/districts
  • District joining with Regional Occupational Centers/Programs (ROC/P) to form a committee
  • Countywide committee for several programs
Activities
  • Review curriculum and facilities
  • Sponsor mentoring activities
  • Identify equipment needs
  • Sponsor guest speakers
  • Conduct surveys
  • Plan/conduct field trips or on-site visits
  • Plan/conduct in-service for instructors
  • Identify new advances in the industry
  • Assist in identifying all aspects of an industry
  • Provide work-based learning sites
  • Provide placement of career technical education program completers
  • Initiate and maintain an effective public relations program
