World Language Reading Challenge FAQs

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) related to the World Language Reading Challenge.
  1. What is the World Language Reading Challenge?

The World Language Reading Challenge is an optional annual event taking place during National World Language Week in March. Local educational agencies interested in participating may do so by having students read authentic texts in the target language and recognizing students who participate by providing a certificate of recognition from the California Department of Education.

  2. Which students are eligible to part in the World Language Reading Challenge?

All California students enrolled in world language or multilingual programs in preschool through grade 12 may participate by reading age-appropriate texts in the target language.

  3. What kind of recognition will be provided by the California Department of Education (CDE)?

The CDE will provide a digital certificate template to participating local educational agencies (LEAs). LEAs may access this template by submitting the online World Language Reading Challenge Participation Form available on the CDE World Language Reading Challenge web page under the “Toolkit and Forms” tab.

  4. What information is the CDE requesting from local educational agencies (LEAs) in order to participate?

The information the CDE is collecting can be found in the online World Language Reading Challenge Participation Form located on the CDE World Language Reading Challenge web page under the “Toolkit and Forms” tab.

  5. When is the deadline to submit the World Language Reading Challenge Participation Form?

It is recommended that LEAs submit the online World Language Reading Challenge Participation Form as soon as they have identified the number of students participating in the LEA. The form may be submitted before, during, or after the World Language Reading Challenge week. To be included in the participation data published in the spring, the CDE asks that LEAs submit their forms by March 31 each year.

  6. When will the CDE send the certificate templates to the LEAs?

The CDE will send an automatically generated email with a link to the templates as soon as the form is submitted. If the submitter does not receive the template, please email the CDE Multilingual Support Division at SEAL@cde.ca.gov.

  7. What resources are available to support LEAs in implementing the World Language Reading Challenge locally?

The California Language Teachers Association Underrepresented Languages Special Interest Group provides a toolkit of resources including guidance, reading log templates, promotional materials, and more. This toolkit is available CDE World Language Reading Challenge web page under the “Toolkit and Forms” tab.

  8. In which world languages may students participate in the World Language Reading Challenge?

Students may participate in any world language other than English.

  9. How can I contact the CDE if I have questions?

For questions related to the World Language Reading Challenge, contact the CDE Multilingual Support Division by phone at 916-319-0845 or by email at SEAL@cde.ca.gov.
