Long Descriptions for Chapter Five

Long descriptions for complex figures and tables in chapter five of the Improving Education for Multilingual and English Learner Students: Research to Practice.

Figure 5.1. Four Practices that Support Multilingual and English Learner Students

A figure shows a graphical representation of four interrelated practices for English learner student support: using English purposefully, interacting in meaningful ways, understanding how English works, and ongoing formative assessment. The four practices are surrounded by a ring to symbolize policies and structures that support asset-based approaches.

Figure 5.3. The Teaching and Learning Cycle

A figure shows a graphical representation of a set of five teaching practices that make up the teaching and learning cycle. The practices are: building the field, exploring the language of text types, jointly constructing texts, independently constructing texts, and reflecting on own texts. In the figure, these practices are surrounded by three additional practices: prioritizing students’ assets and interests, scaffolding thinking, discussion, reading, and writing; and observing students carefully. At the center of the graphic is the goal of the teaching and learning cycle: student autonomy.
