July 12, 2013

Mathematics Subject Matter Committee (MSMC) Members Present at the California Department of Education (CDE) in Sacramento:

Mathematics Subject Matter Committee (MSMC) Chair Ed D’Souza called the meeting to order.

  1. Welcome and Introductions (Information)

    Phil Lafontaine, Director of the Professional Learning Support Division, and Marcia Trott provided information about the draft California Quality Professional Learning Standards, which are system and programmatic standards.

  2. Discussion on Editing the Draft Mathematics Framework (Information/Action)

    MSMC Co-chair D’Souza asked CFIRD staff and Dr. Yakes, one of the framework writers, to walk through each of the following chapters: Universal Access, Acceleration (retitled to Course Placement and Sequences), Financial Literacy, Transitional Kindergarten, Grades 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8.

    Assisting staff in the discussion were Dona Meinders from WestEd on Universal Access, Neal Finkelstein from WestEd on Course Placement and Sequences, and Jim Charkins from the California Council on Economic Education on Financial Literacy.

    During their discussion, the MSMC members came to a general consensus on the on a number of edits to the draft chapters and directed staff and Dr. Yakes to made the edits to the chapters in preparation of the July 30 Instructional Quality Commission meeting.

    Tom Adams, Director of the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division, outlined the next steps in the framework development and approval process, including an informational presentation in September 2013 at the State Board of Education (SBE) meeting which would be followed in November 2013 by SBE action on the framework.

    No action was taken by the MSMC.

  3. Public Comment: None

MSMC Co-chair D’Souza adjourned the meeting at 3:15 p.m.
