ATLAS Repository

Authentic Tasks for Learning and Assessment in Science (ATLAS) is a statewide repository of performance tasks embedded in learning for science.

Background

Bill Text – Senate Bill (SB) 153 Education finance: education omnibus budget trailer bill called for the development of a statewide repository of high-quality curriculum-embedded performance tasks across all grade levels, mapped to the California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS).

SB 153, Statutes of 2023, Chapter 38, Section 113 appropriates $7 million from the General Fund to the Superintendent for allocation to the Los Angeles County Office of Education to contract, with the approval of the executive director of the State Board of Education, with one or more nonprofit organizations. These nonprofit organizations must have specified expertise to do certain things, including, among others, to develop a statewide repository of high-quality curriculum-embedded performance tasks across all grade levels, mapped to the CA NGSS for use by local educational agencies and educators to support inquiry-based instruction and assessment. They also will be expected to research existing high-quality curriculum-embedded performance tasks aligned to the CA NGSS and identify tasks that can be used for the California repository. The name of this repository will be Authentic Tasks for Learning and Assessment in Science (ATLAS).
