NPS Out-of-State Placement

Reporting requirements for out-of-state nonpublic school (NPS) placement.

California Education Code 56365(f) requires that if a local educational agency (LEA) places a pupil with a nonpublic school outside of California, the pupil's individualized education program (IEP) team shall submit a report to the California Department of Education within 15 days of the placement decision.

The Out-of-State Nonpublic School Placement Notice (PDF) requires information on the:

  • special education and related services provided by the out-of-state program placement,
  • costs of the special education and related services provided,
  • and efforts of the LEA to locate an appropriate public school or nonpublic school within the state.
