REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2022–23 INSTRUCTIONAL QUALITY COMMISSION STUDENT MEMBER

As defined by Education Code Section 33530 (amended 2015)

(d)(1) It is the intent of the Legislature to encourage the state board to consider appointing a pupil to the commission, using the current appointment process. (2) Notwithstanding Section 1020 of the Government Code, if the state board elects to appoint a pupil to the commission, the pupil shall meet both of the following criteria: (A) The pupil has been enrolled in a California high school for a minimum of two consecutive years. (B) The pupil is in good standing.

The California State Board of Education (SBE) is seeking applications for a Student Member to serve a one-year term on the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC).

The Student Member will function as a regular voting member with the full rights and duties of the other members of the IQC. Any student who is a California resident and meets the above two criteria is eligible to apply.

The estimated time commitment required for the Student Member will be a one-day orientation on January 19, 2022, and at least two consecutive school days every other month to attend regular IQC meetings held in Sacramento. If needed, additional subcommittee meetings may be scheduled. All of these meetings require preparation time to study the agenda materials and prepare feedback in advance.

Upcoming IQC meetings may be held either as an audio/video teleconference or an in-person meeting and will have a live webcast. The SBE Board Room 1101 in the California Department of Education may be closed to the public, consistent with state and local public health orders. Details regarding access to the meeting and public comment will be posted on each meeting’s agenda notice.

The Student Member will serve without pay. All authorized travel costs related to the IQC meetings (e.g., transportation, lodging, meals) are reimbursed in accordance with state regulations with the exception of airfare, which is directly paid by the California Department of Education. Please note that costs associated with virtual meetings (e.g., internet service or device cost) are not reimbursable expenses.
